One of the main attractions of the Canary Islands as a holiday destination is the all year round sunny weather so it is a winter holiday destination too. The weather in the individual Canary Islands does differ based on the proximity of each island to the trade winds and the altititude. Lanzarote weather is unique so it is a good idea to be aware of its plus points and negative points. The weather in Lanzarote although consistent in Summer does vary across the island. In general terms The North of the island is cloudier and windier and also wetter, or should I say more moist as on any part of Lanzarote rainfull is minimal. The interior of the island tends to be hotter than the coasts. In the South West of the island Playa Blanca weather is generally the hottest having its own unique microclimate. The average temperature here is a degree or two higher than the rest of Lanzarote. So if you get up one morning and it is cloudy dont let that put you off going out for the day. It will be sunny on other parts of the island!!
Lanzarote is the lowest of the islands its highest point being around 600 metres but on average most of the island is 300 metres and less. This makes Lanzarote one of the more arid islands with less than 5 inches annual rainfall. This is because incoming cloud has no barrier to rise over. The higher the clouds are forced to rise then the more likely rainfall will occur. Tenerife on the other hand is basically one huge central volcano with the slopes of Teide dropping down to the coast. Gran Canaria is even more moist hence the banana plantations etc for which the Canary Islands are famous..
The other feature that Lanzarote is famous for is the continuous breeze that blows ensuring a more equal range of temperatures throughout the year. The Azores high results in the constant North East winds called the trade winds because these are the winds that saiing ships used to get to Lanzarote from Spain and then onto the Americas.Winter temperatures average around 70 degrees F while summer temperatures average around 82 degrees F. The range is only around 10 degrees from max to low. The trade winds are at their strongest from March through to September. The breeze is most welcome in the height of summer otherwise temperatures would hit 90 to 100 as in parts of mainland Spain which is much further north. The wind is something to bear in mind if going to Lanzarote in the Winter. Even with temperatures in the low seventies if there is cloud cover and a strong wind blowing it can be too cold to be on the more exposed beaches. Residents agree that September and October are probably the best months to visit Lanzarote. By this time the Trade winds have lessened considerably plus the sun is not quite so high.
From time to time ,usually in the Summer, hot dust laden air is brought in from the Sahara in North Africa. This can be quite humid and unpleasant and can last for up to a week sometimes. If really severe it can affect people with respiratory problems The locals call this the Calima or El Tiempo Africano. If you are on a walking holiday it is adviseable not to venture out in these conditions. You can tell when a Calima arrives. Wind direction changes from North to South East and the sky appears white rather than blue. Saharan sand in the form of a light brown dust will be visible on anything that doesn`t move.
Rain does fall on the island , mainly in the Winter and storms from the Atlantic can be quite severe especially on the west coast of Lanzarote. These tend to occur in December or January but tend to be short lived. It is unusual indeed to see more than 3 wet days together on Lanzarote. It is also worth bearing in mind that freak storms can occur.Lanzarote is on the same latitude as Florida in the US so Hurricanes formed in the Carribean can affect the Canaries as they track across the Atlantic although they will have lost most of their energy by the time they reach the Islands. It was the tail end of a hurricane that caused a lot of damge particularly to the Playa Flamingo beach in November 2005.
