Famara beach can be found on the wild north west coast of Lanzarote. The beach is backed dramatically by the gigantic El Risco de Famara cliffs which sweep down from Mirador Del Rio. With no landfall from here till North America the Atlantic waves sweep in with a vengeance making this a surfers and kite boarders paradise. If you are going to Surf Famara definitely bring a wind break. There are some low lying dunes nearer the start of the beach which will give some protection from the wind. Definitely not a place for badminton or frisbie!! You will also find the familiar Zocos Stone shelters to protect against the wind here. Watch out for naturists though!! The Canary Islands and Surf Famara in particular are well known for nude sunbathing. One other thing to note if visiting Famara. The strong undercurrents and strong prevailing winds strip sand from the beach in Winter but the beach is replenished naturally by the Summer.
There are a couple of bars and shops in the village Sa Caleta and a surf hire shop where you can hire body boards, surfboards, wetsuits etc. Even if surfing is not your thing the family can have a great day out at Surf Famara.. Although the sea here is not safe for inexperienced swimmers children adequately supervised by an adult will have a whale of a time just jumping over the waves as they hit the beach. If you do decide to swim here the water is very bracing.Remember not to go too far out and always swim parrallel to the shore. There is usually a red flag flying here denoting strong undercurrents. Always watch out for any large waves coming in. They can swamp you before you know it and can cause you to become disorientated. It happened to me several years ago. I was waving at family on the beach and next thing a huge wave swamped me from the rear and I ended up upside down trying to swim to the surface. It is funny now but at the time it certainly wasn`t..
