El Golfo

El Golfo is a tiny fishing village situated right on the black jagged lava coast just 2 minutes from the Green Lagoon (Lago Verde) in the South West of Lanzarote. Heading west from this most easterly of the Canary Islands there is no landfall till the Atlantic meets North America. The Canary Islands position in the Atlantic means the waves pound in here and fresh fish straight from the sea are served up in the restaurants in the centre of the village as well as Paella and fillet steaks. El Golfo is about 20 minutes drive from Playa Blanca and 40 minutes from Puerto del Carmen the two nearest resorts in Lanzarote. Other than the restaurants there is nothing of significance in the village but it is fantastic to have a meal here looking west into the sunset. You can walk to view the Green Lagoon which is well worth a view. The lagoon has been roped off in recent years to prevent footfall damage from errant tourists. Also winter storms continue to encroach on the lagoon. The water volume here now is significantly lower than say, ten years ago. I understand there will be some work carried out here in the near future in order to preserve the unique green lagoon. The green in the water is due to bacteria and other mineral deposits. The high cliffs surrounding the lagoon are in fact the remains of the crater of an active volcano that has been eroded by the sea. It now forms a crescent shape as half of the volcano has been eroded away... While you are here pop back into the car and drive down to the black lava beach at Los Hervidores(the boiling pots). The black lava sand beach is unique in itself but the narrow inlets created by lava flows cause massive blow outs when the waves pound into them.. great photo opportunities here in beautiful Lanzarote the most unique of the Canary Islands.

El Golfo is only a tiny village with one shop, one hotel, and four or five restaurants including the Hotel Restaurant. The restaurants have small terraces right on the sea front. The waiters bring the meals from the kitchens on the other side of the road but a bit of research tells me that the best restaurant is the only two storey restaurant in the village. It is the second on the right as you enter the village. It has an upstairs terrace which is great for viewing the sunset over Lanzarote.. It also has a set menu , the fish and the steak are the best apparently.

There is easy parking in the village and a childrens play area at the far end. There is only one way into the village, there is no road after this as the malpais stretches on into the distance for kilometre after kilometre.

The Hotel in the village is family owned with 9 double bedrooms , a restaurant and a sea water swimming pool. I`d advise staying over just the one night so you can enjoy a meal on the upstairs terrace of the adjacent restaurant mentioned earlier . The reason I suggest this is because I would not fancy driving in the pitch dark down the extremely narrow roads here back to Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen. The hotel is a basic two star but would do the job. (see reviews)

Flightline.co.uk is based in Essex and has been established since 1989. The company does airport parking, holiday flights, holiday accomodation, holiday insurance or can arrange a complete package for you fully protected. I have flown and booked holidays independently for over ten years now and would highly reccomend Flightline.co.uk whom I have used on many an occasion for flights to Lanzarote and other Canary Islands. Use the search box on the left to find the ideal flights to suit your intinerary and match in with your accomodation using the holidaylettings.co.uk link above left.
